Lakota East Boys Pull Off Upset of Top Ranked Wayne

03/07/2016

Anything can happen in "March Madness" basketball. The decided underdog, Lakota East, upset undefeated Dayton Wayne on Saturday, to win arguably the biggest game in the 19-year history of their program, by a score of 60-57 at Wright State. It was the Hawks second District Title since the 2011 season and advances them, unpredictably, to the Regional Semi-Finals on Wednesday at the Cintas Center on the Xavier University campus.

Coming into the contest, Wayne had won 33 games in row, including its first Division I state championship last March. The Warriors had just four games decided by 10 points or fewer this season and were ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press state poll as well as No. 10 in the latest USA Today Super 25 national poll but Lakota East endured constant full-court pressure by the Warriors to improve to 18-7 and advance to Wednesday's regional tournament at Xavier.

The Thunderhawks (18-7) will face the Centerville Elks (16-10), upset winner over Cincinnati LaSalle 58-38, Wednesday at 6:15 PM.  in the regional semifinals at Xavier's Cintas Center. The winner will play either Wilmington or Moeller for the Regional Title and a trip to the State "Final
Four" on Saturday, March 12th.
