Mason Comets Girls Tennis Wins District Title

A Mason team has won the Southwest District title for the third consecutive year at the finals of the Southwest District Championships at the ATP. Seniors Amanda Huser and Isabel Cepeda defeated Ursuline's O'Connor and Foster in the semis 6-3, 7-5. In the final they overpowered Sycamore's Liu and Kalaiarasan 6-1, 6-0. The Comets played dominating tennis in the final. Huser controlled the points with powerful forehands and Cepeda finished with crisp volleying. Cepeda even recorded a rare, wind-aided ace. Huser and Cepeda will be one the number one seeds in the state tournament which starts Friday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

The team of senior, Sneha Kandi and junior, Nicole Reid started fast with a 6-1 win in the first set against Sycamore's Kalaiarasan and Liu, but it was all downhill after that set. The Comets lost 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 to Sycamore in the semis before falling to Ursuline's O'Connor and Foster in the third/fourth match 6-0, 6-0. They will be a number four seed in Friday's state tournament.

Huser is a two-time district champ, winning last year's district championship with Lizzy Kong. Cepeda also has a pair of district titles, winning with Kong in 2014.

The Comets will again be sending four players to the state tournament, the most in the Southwest District. Mason is ranked #1 in the Ohio polls.

The entire Comet team will be competing in the Final Four of the OTCA state team tournament on October 23rd at Reynoldsburg High School in Columbus.
