Mason Dominates GMC Wrestling Championships to Bring Home Eighth Straight Title

As one of the state's top wrestling programs, the Mason Comets wasted no time in imposing its will (and depth) upon the GMC Wrestling Championships held at Lakota East on Saturday, February 4th.  By placing 11 out of 14 wrestlers in the first place finals, Mason amassed an insurmountable number of points that put a great deal of daylight between the Comets and the rest of the field. When the dust settled and the mats were rolled up, the Mason grapplers headed home with their eighth consecutive GMC wrestling title.

Along with the GMC team title, Mason's Zachary Donathan - GMC Wrestler of the Year and Head Coach Ryan Root - GMC Coach of the Year were also recognized by a vote of conference coaches.

Team Scores tell the GMC story:

Mason 242, Fairfield 162.5, Oak Hills 133.5, Lakota East 114.5, Sycamore 83, Lakota West 63, Middletown 38.5, Colerain 36, Princeton 34, and Hamilton 11.

Individual Champion Totals: Mason 6 champions, Fairfield 3 champions, Oak Hills 2 champions, Lakota East 2 champions and Sycamore with 1 champion.

The OHSAA Sectional Championships will be held at Hamilton HS on Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25th. Each sectional will qualify the top four (4) wrestlers in each weight class to the district tournament.

Many thanks to the Lakota East AD, Rich Bryant and athletic staff for hosting a first class, well-run event for GMC student-athletes.
