GMC Swim Coaches Receive Statewide Recognition

With the OHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships serving as a platform for swimming excellence in Ohio, two Greater Miami Conference Head Swim Coaches were honored for their dedication, efforts and accomplishments in working with young people.

Mark Sullivan, Mason Head Swimming Coach, was selected as the 2017 OHSAA Division I Girls "Coach of the Year".  His Mason Comet squad finished an outstanding swim season with a narrow runner-up finish (241 pts. to 230 pts.) to state champion Upper Arlington. Coach Sullivan's Mason program has operated an extremely high level for a number of years and produced numerous state champions over the years; case in point being this past state meet where Mason saw three more individual state championship performances added to that ever-growing total - two by Allison Bloebaum and one by Stanford commit Ashley Volpenhein.  Mark Sullivan was also honored weeks earlier as the Southwest District Division I Girls "Coach of the Year" as well. His leadership and program vision have most certainly established the Mason Comets as a "year in and year out" force to be reckoned with in the water!

Lakota Head Swim Coach, Dennis Beck, received the prestigious Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award; which also was awarded at the state meet in Canton this past weekend.  This award is presented to a head coach as selected by the Executive Committee or by a directive of the state coaches association. It is awarded each year in every OHSAA recognized sport.  This award honors a head coach who exhibits a high degree of dedication, unwavering sportsmanship, and integrity over a lengthy period of time in their career. It is a person who reflects a positive role model for young people, is completely committed to their sport and displays a high degree of coaching professionalism.  The coach who receives this recognition further reinforces all the positive impact qualities sought in a mentor to young people.

The Greater Miami Conference is fortunate to have many outstanding coaches working with the young people of the league.  Is very gratifying that Mason's Mark Sullivan and Lakota's Dennis Beck have received state-acclaim for their dedication and efforts on behalf of student-athletes.

Congratulations on a job very well done!
