GMC Baseball Tournament Action: Lakota West Rolls On To Regional Finals Vs. St. X

05/26/2017

The GMC Champion Lakota West Baseball team had to show a lot of patience on Thursday in the OHSAA Regional Semi-Final game against Centerville.  The Firebirds had to wait an extra hour for the game to start due to rain-storms and then waited five innings to score their first run to tie the game.  The team then waited another 4-innings to capitalize on an Elk error to score two go-ahead runs.

Senior Jake Kates sealed the victory in the 9th inning going another complete game.  It was his 8th complete game of the season breaking the Lakota West school record owned by Austin Rhoads (’01) and Austin Allinger (’15).

After 3.5 innings of play, Centerville broke the ice and scored their first and only run of the game.  Alex Firsdon, who reached base on an error, was knocked in on a single by Morgan Colopy.   Centerville recorded five of their seven total hits in the first four innings and appeared to be in control, but Dominc Schivone made a heads up fielder’s choice at home preventing another run by the charging Elks and the Firebirds escaped the inning stranding two Elks on base.

With the momentum shifting back to West, AJ Petersen started the 5th inning with a triple.  Bryce Johnson knocked him in two batters latter knotting the game at 1-1.

The Firebirds finally took the lead in the top of the 9th inning after Frankie Schmitt reached 1st on an error by the 3rd baseman.  Bryce Johnson hit a single on a planned “hit and run” advancing Schmitt all the way to third base.  Inexplicably, the centerfielder throws the ball to second base to prevent Johnson from advancing. The throw results in an error scoring both Schmitt and Johnson.

Kates returned to the mound the ninth inning and continued his dominance.  Perhaps the Elks “rattled the cage” of Kates when he was hit by pitch for the second time of the game in the 5th inning because he went on to allow only two hits and zero runs in the last five innings of the ball game.

Friday’s OHSAA Regional Championship marks the 5th time the Firebird baseball team advances to the Elite 8 since the school opened in 1997.  The Birds have a 2-2 record in regional championship games.

Next Game(Regional Finals, Round of 8): The Firebirds (24-5) play St. Xavier (22-4) on Friday, May 26, 5:00 pm at University of Cincinnati.  Admission is $7.00.
