Mason's Sammie Puisis Named McDonald's All-American

01/25/2019

The Mason senior was named to the McDonald's All-American basketball game Thursday afternoon. The 6-foot-1 wing is one of the top players in the state of Ohio and one of the premier players in the country.

Puisis is rated as a five-star prospect in ESPNW's 2019 Hoopgurlz rankings and is ranked as the No. 7 player at her position and No. 37 player overall nationally in the '19 class per the same site.

She has been named Player of the Year in the Greater Miami Conference in each of the past two seasons and has been named first-team all-Ohio the past two years, as well.

Last season Puisis helped lead the Comets to the state final four and a regional championship. She averaged 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.4 assists last year, similar to her 16.6 points, six rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.6 assists as a sophomore.

Puisis was one of four Ohioans named to this year's game. Zia Cooke of Toledo Rogers (South Carolina signee) and Jordan Horston of Columbus Africentric (Tennessee signee) will join Puisis on the East team while Kierstan Bell of Canton McKinley (Ohio State signee) will suit up for the West squad.

Puisis will also be teamed with a future teammate as fellow Seminoles signee, River Baldwin from Pleasant Home High School in Alabama, has been assigned to the East squad.

Puisis is the first local girl to be named to the McDonald's All-American game since Princeton's' Kelsey Mitchell played in the 2014 game. She joins previous GMC standouts Dee Davis 2003 (Princeton) and Amber Gray 2008 (West) as McDonald's honorees.  Princeton's Darius Bazley played in last year's boys' All-American game. The GMC is very proud to have had 5 McDonald's All-Americans. It speaks volumes regarding the quality of basketball in the conference.

The 2019 girls' McDonald's All-American game will take place on March 28 at 5 p.m. at Atlanta's State Farm Arena.
