The GMC is one of the oldest and most respected high school Athletic conferences in Ohio. Member schools have captured 73 OHSAA team championships and 203 OHSAA individual event championships. In addition conference member schools have placed teams in final national rankings (USA Today and other publications) in football, boys and girls basketball, girls soccer, softball and baseball. Numerous individual athletes from the GMC have won national individual championships or have been selected as high school All-Americans. Former GMC athletes have also successfully competed in the professional major league ranks in football, women's golf, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, and baseball, as well as in the Olympic Games in both men's swimming and wrestling. All ten member schools compete at the Ohio Division I level (largest schools).
Historical Milestones
*First Year (66-67)...GMC founded with six charter member schools: Fairfield, Hamilton Garfield, Hamilton Taft, Miamisburg, Middletown, and Princeton. Only 8 sports were competed; cross country, tennis, gymnastics, wrestling, swimming, golf, baseball, and track & field with competition for boys only.
*Second Year (67-68)...Miamisburg leaves the league at end of year...This was first year of boys football and boys basketball competition. Competition in these sports had been delayed one year to allow fulfillment of previous contractual commitments...The five schools remaining are Fairfield, Hamilton Garfield, Hamilton Taft, Middletown and Princeton.
*Third year (68-69)...First girls sports competed; volleyball and basketball.
*Fifteenth year (80-81)...The league expands to an even number of members for ease of scheduling. As had been previously decided, Lakota was added as a member. Lakota came in from the Mid Miami League. Shortly after this action had been agreed on, Hamilton, which had split into Taft and Garfield in 1958, decided to consolidate these two high schools, also effective in the fall of 1980. To achieve the desired even number of members Lima Senior was then invited to join the league in the same year as Lakota. Lima Senior had competed against Fairfield, Taft, Garfield and Middletown when all five had been members of the old Greater Ohio League prior to the formation of the GMC. At this point in time, the conference consisted of Fairfield, Hamilton, Lakota, Lima Senior, Middletown, and Princeton.
*Twenty-fourth year (89-90)...The conference expands to eight members with the addition of Sycamore and Milford. These two schools came in from the Eastern Metro League. Member schools are Fairfield, Hamilton, Lakota, Lima Senior, Middletown, Milford, Princeton, and Sycamore.
*Thirty-second year (97-98)...The conference expands to ten members with the addition of Colerain and the split of Lakota. Colerain came in from the Metro County conference. It was decided at the spring superintendents meeting that Lima Senior would leave the league effective 2000-2001 to alleviate mounting travel costs. Member schools are Colerain, Fairfield, Hamilton, Lakota East, Lakota West, Lima Senior, Middletown, Milford, Princeton, and Sycamore.
*Thirty-fifth year (00-01)...Oak Hills replaces Lima Senior. Oak Hills comes in from the Queen City Conference. Member schools are Colerain, Fairfield, Hamilton, Lakota East, Lakota West, Middletown, Milford, Oak Hills, Princeton, and Sycamore.
*Forty-second year (07-08)...Mason comes into the league from the Fort Ancient Valley Conference (FAVC) trading places with Milford who moved to the FAVC. GMC member schools are Colerain, Fairfield, Hamilton, Lakota East, Lakota West, Mason, Middletown, Oak Hills, Princeton, and Sycamore.
*Fiftieth year (15-16)...Greater Miami Conference celebrates it's Golden Anniversary
